Growing discrepancies between branch tallies pulled from the latest government reports and what Home Health corporations boast on their websites indicate rapid, on-going growth in the sector.  Per the Department of Health and Human Services, the number of Medicare-certified HHAs increased by 59% from 2002 to 2009, and the market shows no sign of slowing as baby-boomers continue to mature to senior-status.

Long term care (LTC) facilities were the next stop for over 35% of annual inpatient discharges, according to 2010 Medicare claims data.

LTC-bound patient destinations included a fairly even split between Nursing Home and Home Health settings, with each receiving just under 20% of total discharges - four times that of the next discharge destination in line.

A look at Case Mix Index (CMI) calculated from Medicare claims paid during the third quarter of 2011 reveals a higher average CMI among southern hospitals than those operating in the northeast region.

CMI, which measures the clinical severity of patients serviced by a particular provider, is determined based on procedure volume weights and directly impacts Medicare reimbursement rates.  The greater the CMI, the sicker the patients and more complicated the procedures, garnering reimbursement rate adjustments designed to help hospitals better cover costs.

Financials per most recently report CMS Cost Reports

Hospitals included in the 5,677-facility review averaged 62 MD affiliates per facility.  The sub-set of hospitals that were awarded EHR incentive funds in 2011 touted physician-affiliation averages above 100, nearly double the 59-physician average of their non-attesting peers.

Hospitals that successfully attested for MU in 2011 also averaged over $200M in net patient revenue (NPR), coming in nearly 70% above the average NPR of non-attesting hospitals.

Just over half of hospitals that received MU payouts in 2011 are owned by healthcare systems, including 280+ hospitals represented by just over 60 unique corporations.

Each of the top 10 systems experienced 75% or higher hospital EHR Incentive participation rates.  Four of the top 25 systems tout bringing ten or more hospitals on board for MU in 2011, with HCA, Inc. leading in total number of inpatient facilities attesting, claiming 5x as many MU success cases as the next system in line.

Less than 15% of U.S. healthcare systems are estimated to have claimed incentive funds by year-end 2011, mirroring participation rates at the hospital level, rumored to now be above the 1,000 facility mark.

Over 3,700 individual Medicare providers (along with over 145 hospitals not referenced above) have received payments through the government-sponsored EMR incentive program as of September 20, 2011.  The most highly reimbursed cities are, surprisingly, not major metropolitan areas, and the highest-ranking states for number of attesting entities does not necessarily parallel the actual revenue pay-out rankings by state.  Recent CMS announcements suggest the number of attesting MDs has more than doubled since the last published list was made available.
